A2 ME4 MEDIA - TEXT, INDUSTRY AND AUDIENCE - MAGAZINE INDUSTRY.

A  site with useful profiles of UK publishers and their titles.  Click the link to access: http://www.magforum.com/

For the owners of COSMOPOLITAN, the Hearst Magazine Company, and for essential details about COSMO and other magazines also owned by Hearst follow  the link: http://www.hearst.co.uk/

AS - ME1 REPRESENTATION - NEWPAPERS

It is important that all the AS students become more familiar with the various newpapers available in the UK, the owners of each newpaper, the implicit ideology, and also their circulation figures, so follow the link and read as many of The Guardian articles in this section as you can: http://www.guardian.co.uk/media/abcs

AS - ME1 REPRESENTATION - EVENTS - TELEVISION NEWS

An essential resource is the  Broadcasters' Audience Research Board - BARB, from this you can find out the viewing figures for any television programme.  As we are currently looking at BBC News 24 and Sky News then I'd like you to check out their viewing figures, their weekly reach and how many hours and minutes people, on average, view the programmes.

A2 ME4 MEDIA - TEXT, INDUSTRY AND AUDIENCE - MAGAZINE INDUSTRY.

Moving on to our second magazine, COSMOPOLITAN, then look at this Guardian interview with the current editor, Louise Court,  who has some potentially useful comments on the magazine's content and representations and how she feels it is perceived generally, perhaps stereotypically, certainly erroneously in her opinion.   She also talks about the digital versions and how they are selling in comparison with the print editions.  According to the ABC website the figures are not yet available, they are due on the 9th of March 2012, but that is not definite.  So the editor's claims are the only ones we can use at the moment; trusting the veracity of her comments until we have more information.  Make sure you follow the link, towards the end of the interview, for last week's ABC figures for June to December 2011.  Click the link to access:

ME1 - AS REPRESENTATION - EVENTS

For those students who, this week at least, are studying representation in the newspaper and television industry, then looking through this site to find the national newspaper circulation figures, including online viewing figures, would provide some useful information for discussion in class.  The site also has the circulation figures for regional newspapers, which we'll be looking at in the next few weeks.  You need to sign up to get access.  Click the link:

AS - ME1 REPRESENTATION - EVENTS

The AS students who need to watch the rolling news programmes, News 24 in particular but also Sky News for next week's lesson, and the class who need to watch news programmes and read newspapers before we analyse representation of events in various editions, should  look at the BBC news online; it covers the latest news issues, UK and local news, and technology could also be useful for future lessons. Bookmark it and view it!  Click on link to access:

A2 ME4 MEDIA-TEXT, INDUSTRY AND AUDIENCE - MAGAZINE INDUSTRY

It would be a good idea to read this article in The Guardian  about the Nuts relaunch in August 2011.  It includes details about the new content, and the new strapline: "When you REALLY need something funny."  The article makes an interesting note of the research done prior to the relaunch with 1000 men aged between 16-24 - which differs from IPCs own demographic target audience noted on their website.  In the final paragraph there is a link to other Guardian articles about magazines including COSMOPOLITAN celebrating 40 years, which would be useful for next week's analysis.  Click on link to access:

Check out Hearst's very first television commercial for the launch of the magazine in Britain 40 years ago this month. It was advertised as: "A sensational new magazine for women who are interested in men, love, fashion, food, men, travel, films, beauty and themselves … and men."

ME4 - U6 - THE MAGAZINE INDUSTRY

Here are the three magazines that we will be analysing in the next few weeks for the ME4 examination.  It would be useful if you researched each of the magazines, both actual copies and online before we study them in class, but as we will already have started on our study of Nuts then I need you to look at the following websites retrospectively to ensure that you have all the necessary information for future lessons and written work

For  COSMOPOLITAN go to: http://www.cosmopolitan.com/

Also look at the Hearst Communications pages, the owners of COSMO:http://www.hearst.com/magazines/

 For THE BIG ISSUE:

For Nuts the link to follow is:

However there are a number of other websites that are essential resources for your research, concerned with demographics, with circulation figures and advertising
Start with IPC the company behind Nuts:

Look particularly at the following pages concerned with ABCs and circulation data and download:
http://www.ipcadvertising.com/contact-ipc-advertising/numbers.cfm

There is also come useful information on audience, the Cross Cultural Consumer Characterisation - the 4Cs for short here:

And make sure you start to look on line at The Guardian Media section, this is an excellent site for essential resources, and the article discussed in class on magazine circulation that could be useful for your written work can be looked at more closely by following the link:

A further very useful Guardian article by Laura Barton on men's magazine can also be accessed online, so make sure you read it as part of your research:

http://www.guardian.co.uk/media/2004/jan/17/pressandpublishing.weekendmagazine?INTCMP=SRCH

Continuing with issues of audience and audience theories then look at the Uses and Gratifications model as discussed by McQuail who explained a number of uses which provide a useful starting point when explaining the appeal of media texts:
